Armed Russian Cruise Missile Crashes in Eastern Poland, NATO Activates Defenses

POLAND — An armed Russian Kh-101 cruise missile violated Polish airspace and crashed in a field near Tarnawa-Kolonia, approximately 31 miles (50 km) from Lublin, during a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight into July 30.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the missile was armed and in all probability Russian, with no reason to believe Poland was the target. Two objects violated Polish airspace; one crashed with physical evidence at the site, and the other briefly approached the border.

Polish and NATO forces activated air and ground defenses in response. Polish fighter jets were scrambled as Russian missiles approached NATO’s eastern border, according to the Ukrainian Army Media channel.

No casualties or damage to structures occurred on Polish territory; the impact left a crater in an undeveloped agricultural area roughly 1.2 miles from the nearest residences. Coordinates of the village are approximately 50.85 N, 22.65 E.

The Chancellery of the Prime Minister reported that Polish forces were ready at any moment to shoot down the projectile if it had posed a threat to inhabited areas. Preliminary findings and the military assessment of the remnants indicate a Russian Ch-101 cruise missile.

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that General Ireneusz Nowak placed all air-defense systems on readiness from late evening hours, activating national and allied airspace-protection services.

Ukrainian Fighters Attempted To Intercept The Missile As It Reached The Polish Border

Ukrainian fighters attempted to intercept the missiles all the way to the Polish border. The United States stated interest in participating in the clarifying proceedings.

Alarm sirens were activated in the Lublin and Podkarpackie voivodeships, providing approximately 13 minutes of warning via the fastest available system; no Regional Crisis Management Center (RCB) short message service (SMS) alerts were sent because the siren system is faster.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte discussed the violation with Tusk and said that Poland and NATO activated air and ground defenses. Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus G. Grynkewich spoke with Poland’s Chief of Defense and underlined that NATO will continue to take all necessary measures to defend NATO territory.

The incident remains under investigation under prosecutor supervision, with Ukrainian experts to be involved and all Polish services operating in full coordination.

The same overnight Russian strikes killed at least eight civilians across Ukraine, including six members of a family near Kryvyi Rih, and wounded more than 50 others, with residential buildings hit in Lviv and other locations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry detailed the civilian toll and repeated calls for accelerated deliveries of air-defense interceptors. Polish authorities described the Russian attack as one of the largest on Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war.
