Romanian Defense Ministry Destroys Explosive Drone Fragment in Tulcea County
TULCEA COUNTY, ROMANIA — Romanian Ministry of Defense specialists destroyed an explosive charge from drone fragments through controlled detonation in Luncavița commune on June 30.
The Ministry received notification on June 29 after a local resident reported fragments near Rachelu village via the 112 Emergency Service.
Specialized teams from the Ministry and other national defense and security institutions secured the site and assessed risks. They confirmed the presence of an explosive charge.
The charge was destroyed in a specially prepared location in full compliance with established procedures and with no harm to the public or personnel. The Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Constanța Court of Appeal has taken over the case.
Preliminary assessments by Romanian specialists indicate the fragments originated from a drone used in attacks carried out by the Russian Federation against Ukrainian port infrastructure in April, prior to the measures adopted to strengthen and adapt the air defense system following the serious incidents in Galați.
This assessment follows measures to strengthen air defense after prior incidents in the Galați area.
Incident Response and Detonation
The incident occurred entirely within Romanian territory in Tulcea County. Teams followed standard protocols for drone fragment reports.
The controlled detonation took place on the morning of June 30 at the prepared site. No injuries or additional damage were reported, and the area was secured prior to the operation.
Reporting stated the find as fragments of a drone equipped with a warhead or explosive payload, consistent with the Ministry’s preliminary assessment.
Attribution and Context
The Ministry said that preliminary data from specialist assessments link the fragments to a drone employed in Russian Federation attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure in April, prior to the measures adopted to strengthen and adapt the air defense system following the serious incidents in Galați.
The same release provided cumulative figures since the start of the war in Ukraine: more than 100 attacks recorded against targets on Ukrainian territory near Romania’s border, 29 unauthorized Russian drone incursions into Romanian national airspace, and drone or fragment identifications on Romanian territory in approximately 50 cases.
For this year alone the release recorded 33 attacks near the border, 26 Air Policing scrambles, 15 unauthorized incursions, and 14 identifications of drones or fragments on Romanian territory.
These figures appear only in the Ministry’s June 30 release and describe a pattern of prior events rather than new developments tied directly to the current fragments.
