ENGLISH CHANNEL — The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the frigate Admiral Grigorovich fired small-arms warning shots into the water ahead of the UK-registered yacht Bright Future on June 16 after the yacht approached on a course that created collision risk in foggy conditions.
The British Defense Ministry confirmed it is investigating the incident, no injuries or damage are reported as a result of the incident.
Incident Details
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the yacht proceeded on a course that brought it close to the frigate. The frigate crew attempted radio contact, fired warning flares, and sounded signals.
When those measures produced no response, the crew fired warning shots from small arms into the yacht’s path. The yacht then altered course and moved away.
The Defense Ministry stated that its sailors acted in strict accordance with international shipping regulations for hazard avoidance at sea. The British Defense Ministry confirmed it is investigating reports of the incident.
Russian Defense Ministry Account
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the yacht’s approach brought it close to the frigate and that multiple non-lethal warnings were ignored before the warning shots. The ministry released or referenced footage consistent with small-arms fire from a warship deck.
The Defense Ministry stated that the event occurred during the frigate’s presence in the Channel while conducting operations that include escort duties for other Russian vessels.
No statement from the Russian Defense Ministry links the yacht incident directly to any prior British action against Russian shipping.
