UAE Thwarts Series of Sophisticated Cyberattacks Targeting Financial Sector

UAE — The United Arab Emirates Cyber Security Council announced July 3 that the national cybersecurity system contained a series of cyberattacks targeting entities in the financial sector.

The incidents involved attempts to compromise digital systems and critical technology infrastructure, conduct sophisticated phishing campaigns, exploit security vulnerabilities, and deploy software the council described as malicious.

Increased Use Of AI To Develop More Advanced, Complex Techniques

The council noted that attackers are increasingly using artificial intelligence to develop more advanced and complex techniques.

All operations were detected and contained in accordance with national cybersecurity protocols. The council stated that no breaches occurred and financial services continued without disruption.

National cyber monitoring and incident response teams operate around the clock in coordination with government entities, financial institutions, and strategic partners.

The announcement called for organizations to maintain compliance with national cybersecurity regulations and policies, strengthen preventive measures, regularly update systems, and report suspicious cyber activity promptly through official channels.

UAE Cyber Security Council Establishment

The United Arab Emirates Cyber Security Council was established by Cabinet decision in November 2020.

It develops the comprehensive national cybersecurity strategy, legal and regulatory framework, and National Cyber Incident Response Plan to enable swift and coordinated responses to incidents across the country.

The council is chaired by H.E. Dr. Mohamed Al-Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the United Arab Emirates Government.

The council described the primary vectors as phishing campaigns, exploitation of security vulnerabilities, and deployment of software the council described as malicious targeting digital systems and critical technology infrastructure.

The statement linked these methods to a broader trend of attackers adopting artificial intelligence to increase complexity.

Assessment: Details on attack methods originate solely from the United Arab Emirates Cyber Security Council announcement. The announcement observed a rise in the use of artificial intelligence by attackers but did not link AI to the specific cyberattacks on the financial sector.
